Doomsday Art: John Hendrix’s Disaster Portfolio

Well known illustrator John Hendrix’s 9-11 10th Anniversary post recalled how he watched the Twin Towers fall from his roof in Jersey City, newly arrived from Kansas to attend graduate school in New York.  (See that post here)

Hendrix did go to grad school and has produced hundreds of editorial, book and other illustrations in the time since, including major magazine covers.  Perhaps not surprisingly, his portfolio contains a long run of disaster drawings like these – full of detail and drama.

He says his “MFA thesis was a collection of disaster images titled “The Worst of Times” – and I’ve been making these drawings ever since.”
